The Spirit of Might

(AN EXCERPT FROM DR. THOMPSON’S PENTECOST BOOK)

And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. – Isaiah 11:2

In Isaiah 11:2, we learn about Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Might. The term might used in this verse is a derivative of a Hebrew word called gibbor, which means, “champion,” “strong,” “mighty,” or “he who excels.” That term is also associated with a name of God, El Gibbor, which translates to The Mighty God (Gen. 49:24; Ps. 50:1).[i] The Spirit of Might is the manifestation of Holy Spirit revealed when God wants to show Himself strong. He always wants to do this during the establishment of an ordained work so it will be clear that He is its source and sustainer.

We call on El Gibbor to see victory and strength in a situation, but we welcome Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Might when we need to see perpetual progress and ongoing victories. Like the Spirit of Counsel, the Spirit of Might comes to rest on us and on the created thing, and His presence acts as a wall of fire around us that eviscerates loss. He does not always alleviate challenges or the need to fight the good fight of faith, because sometimes we have to contend. But we never have to lose. God has already fought and won for us (Josh. 23:10), and the Spirit of Might teaches us how to live in victory (not just experience it periodically). In addition to keeping us from losing battles, the Spirit of Might keeps us from losing faith, hope, territory, time and progress. He does this by encouraging us to be strong and courageous. Creating and establishing something new always takes courage, and the Spirit of Might is in our lives to help us be brave.

RECEIVE THE SPIRIT

The Spirit of Might is manifesting Himself to you today in two areas. The first area is weakness. He is strengthening your mind, heart, and inner man and replenishing you in every place you have felt worn, depleted, unqualified or unconfident. He is also strengthening you in the areas you are most hard on yourself. The second area that the Spirit of Might is revealing Himself is the unexpected. He is building you up in every you never thought you would have to be strong. He is ministering to you, filling you with might, and shifting you from survival to victory. Receive Him. If you feel weak at any point today, say this, “Spirit of Might, you are my strength! I receive you now!”

RELEASE THE FIRE

Today the fire of God is igniting your victory. Win.
