Word Up: The Rain of the Word

(AN EXCERPT FROM DR. THOMPSON’S REIGN IN THE RAIN BOOK)

For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, […] So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. - Isaiah 55:10-11

There are no prodigal words from the Lord. Not a single syllable from His mouth comes back empty-handed, because His word is like the rain. While rain does return to heaven in the form of evaporation, it never climbs back into the clouds in the same form. So it is with the word. Every word that leaves heaven in the form of instruction returns as manifestation to present the realization of the Father’s purpose as its offering. Jesus Christ, who is the word of God, is the greatest example of this truth (Jn. 1:1), and it is He who teaches us how to live in the rain of God’s word.

The rain of the word is both the seed and saturation of God. It reveals and fulfills the cycle of God’s word to believers by outlining foundational principles and patterns. It teaches us that every word from God has an eternal root and a temporal assignment. Once spoken, the word begins to grow deep down inside of us so it can support the manifestation that will be seen in time. We expedite the fulfillment of that word through intimacy with God. Here’s how it works:

As we seek to intimately know God in times of private devotion, He plants a word in our spirit that will come to pass. Sometimes He rains on the word instantly to show us exactly how to execute it, especially if He wants to warn or prepare us for something that will occur in the immediate future. However, at other times He uses a process called progressive revelation and plants a word that requires added intimacy to wholly comprehend. This word comes coated with many layers, and each time we are in the face of God (not just the presence of God), He removes a layer and allows us to more clearly see what the word means and how it should be applied. He uses this process when He wants to engage intimacy over intellect, and when He wants to minister to us more deeply.

In time, the Lord may choose to send the rain of His word in the form of prophecy. The prophetic word will confirm what He has spoken privately, and will give strategy about how to carry out the intent of that word. While the verbiage and details of the prophecy may be unfamiliar, something at its core should connect with the word in our spirit. God makes this connection so we can respond to the prophetic word with assurance. If the Lord uses prophecy to inform us of something new, we hold that word and remain prayerful until He confirms it. Once confirmation comes, we act on the word and resist the temptation to wait for another prophetic moment. One of the worst things we can do is fall into lethargy and disregard the present rain by looking for the next outpour.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Today God is speaking to your eternal nature, which is your spirit. He wants to make you confident of every word that He has spoken by restoring intimacy to your relationship with Him. If you have started to question a word from the Lord, feed your spirit with the Scriptures and prayer. Intimacy will refresh your desire to manifest the word and give you the tools you need to start working toward it today.
